Reminder: Rodney Summer Camp 2023

Troop 3 Rodney Scouts,

We are getting close!

We have a 60% chance of rain on next Sunday, and it looks to stay below average temperatures in the beginning of the week and rainy.

There is a lot of important information in the email, so please take time to read it carefully.

Please review the Troop resource on What To Pack For Summer Camp with your Scout this week.

Scouts are not allowed to self medicate. All medications and instructions must be provided to the leaders. The medicines and instructions will be collected on arrival. Leaders will oversee the administration of medication throughout the week.

Please arrive at Rodney Scout Reservation by 12:45 PM on Sunday in Class B shirts. Our campsite is Shawnee. Please review the attached map and have your Scout bring a copy of this map and their schedule to camp.

Rodney Scout Reservation

Information on Rodney can be found starting at the link below.

http://www.delmarvacouncil.org

Click “Outdoors”, then “Rodney Scout Reservation Summer Camping” (don’t click on the sub-menu that is revealed at that point).

When you arrive, there will be an area to park as indicated on the map. Parents are not allowed to drive their Scouts to the campsite to drop off. No parents will be allowed into the camping area at all. The Scouts will need to bring their approximately 64qt container, (single person) Sansbug tent, sleeping bag and day pack down to the site. It is a good idea to bring a portable wagon for your Scout to use to bring gear down the campsite.

Scouts will pair up on their own in the provided canvas tents, head to toe. Their Sansbug tent should be placed on the cots, their sleeping bags in the Sansbug tent and their 64 quart gear box under their cot.

If you desire your Scout to be in their own tent, please bring that tent as no extra tents can be provided.

Be reminded that Brownseas may not bring bicycles to camp. All other Scouts who bring bicycles are expected to have signed Bicycle Health and Safety form and must adhere to their pledge.

All Scouts are expected to perform their assigned duties during the week. There will be a posted duty roster by the acting Senior Patrol Leader, Kyle Paff and acting assistant Senior Patrol Leader, Thomas Oresto. Additionally all Scouts are expected to prepare the camp for checkout on Saturday.

To pick up on Saturday, please arrive by 8:30 AM on Saturday. We will leave camp immediately following our cleared checkout inspection, which can be as early as 9:00. Please be considerate and arrive there on time!

Scouts should bring some spending money, or have arranged to “gift cards” at the Trading Post. This year, gift cards at Rodney are really store credit. Information can be found at the trading post website linked below, under the “Gift Card” section at the top.

https://rodney-scout-reservation.square.site/

We typically stock bottled water ($0.50) and Gatorade ($1) so Scouts don’t have to pay higher prices at the Trading Posts, but that does require they use cash for the kitty.

The camp runs a Pizza Night fundraiser on Thursday night, which most boys participate in. The boys pay for their own pizzas, so please ensure they have cash pizza money and remind them to not spend it before Thursday. The boys self organize on who wants to go in on a pie and what toppings on the pie. The pizza ain’t Jersey good, but it ain’t bad.

Be reminded that electronics and phones are a bad idea to bring to camp, especially if this is your Scout’s first time at Rodney. Our Electronics Policy is in full effect for the trip. Please have your Scout review the policy this week.

If you need to contact your Scout in an emergency, you can call the camp (information at www.delmarvacouncil.org) or one of the leaders (my cell is 732-619-9679). Trust us when we tell you: pretty much every boy who has not been away from home before will be completely comfortable at camp after their first night or two as long as they don’t talk to you on the phone during that time.

Additionally, please make sure your mobile phone is up to date in Scoutbook and is “verified” for receiving text messages. I will use the Scoutbook texting facility for communication if needed.

There will be five Troop adult leaders attending the full week this year.

Piyush Sharma, Assistant Scoutmaster
Gerard N Piccini, Unit College Scouter Reserve
Frank Oresto, Troop Committee
Ratnakar Maganti, Troop Committee
Kiran Jangam, Adult volunteer

I will be at camp only until Wednesday

If you have any remaining questions, feel free to reach out to me or Mr. Sharma. See you at camp!

Yours in Scouting,
Jason B Consorti
