For Community Service
1948 – 2010
Tom was a Committee Member and Merit Badge Counselor for Troop 3 who passed away quite suddenly in 2010. He became involved with Troop 3 in 2006 when his son Tommy became a Boy Scout.
Mr. Allen dedicated himself to his family and to his community. He was always available to help whenever it was needed and was known for his patience, wisdom, and insightfulness. The word “impossible” was never a part of Tom’s vocabulary. He loved working with the boys in Troop 3 and his leadership and sense of humor will be missed forever.
Tom resided in Monroe Township his entire life. He became the Superintendent of Recreation for Monroe Township in 1976, a position he held for 34 years. Tom served with the Applegarth Volunteer Fire Department before becoming president from 1976-1977. He was a member of the National Recreation and Parks Association and the NJ Shade Tree Federation. Tom served for many years on the Monroe Township Shade Tree Commission and became the Chairman in 2002. He was a member of the township’s Recreation Advisory Board and an elected Democratic Committeeman.
Tom was married to Susan for 27 years and was the proud and loving father of Megan and Thomas, who became a Troop 3 Eagle Scout in 2012.
Since 2010, Troop 3 has honored his memory by awarding the “Thomas L. Allen Memorial Citizenship Award for Community Service” to those deserving Scouts in the Troop who have performed significant Community Service during the year.
